Everything we do at Art, Heart, and Hoofbeats starts with putting our horses first. Our rescue herd is at the heart of every program, every connection, and every moment of healing we provide. Once considered "unwanted," remarkable equines now thrive in a sanctuary built on love, care, and respect.

Our Horses: From At-Risk to Sanctuary

Being a horse at risk means facing challenges many people don't realize—overbreeding, economic hardship, or abandonment due to a lack of resources or understanding. Sadly, this often leads to horses being funneled into the heartbreaking slaughter pipeline, where they endure cruel conditions and uncertain fates.

At AHH, we provide a haven for 7-9 horses at a time, ensuring they receive the care, attention, and unconditional love they deserve. Each horse here finds more than just shelter—it finds a forever home where it can relax, heal, and flourish.

What Does It Mean to Be a Horse at Risk?

Every year, over 170,000 horses in the United States are deemed "unwanted," with tens of thousands sent to slaughter. These horses are often transported in overcrowded trailers, enduring long journeys without adequate food, water, or rest. They end up in this situation due to overbreeding, industry shifts, and misconceptions about humane treatment.

Thoroughbred/ German Warmblood

Hi, I’m Fable.Life hasn’t been easy. As a Thoroughbred-German Warmblood, I spent years in a breeding program, neglected and standing in knee-deep manure with moldy hay and no clean water.When I arrived at Art, Heart, and Hoofbeats, I didn’t trust humans—honestly, I had no reason to. Even my farrier warned I might hurt someone. But here, things are different. My new humans listened, gave me space, and showed me kindness.I’m still cautious with new people, but I’ll show you my sweet side once you earn my trust. Patience changed my life—now, I finally belong.

Paint Quarter Horse

Hey there, I’m Jake—Jakers to my friends!

I haven’t been at Art, Heart, and Hoofbeats long, but I’m already healing. My breathing is easier, my body feels stronger, and I’ve found a best friend in Fable. Life here is peaceful—good food, kind humans, and plenty of sunshine.

I’m a calm, happy guy who loves attention (and mash!). Don’t be surprised if I nuzzle you for treats if you visit. Around here, love makes all the difference, and I’m finally feeling it.

Mastadon

Gypsy/Clydesdale

Hiya, I’m Mastodon.

They call me a "fun-sized draft" because I’m half Gypsy, half Clydesdale—a big guy in a more compact package! Life wasn’t always easy for me. Before coming to AHH, I lived in a small barbed wire pen, and I still carry the scars to prove it.

I also have an impacted tooth that grew into my jaw, which gives me headaches and means I need gentle, slow care. The humans here watch me closely if I ever need emergency surgery. But despite it all, I’m learning what it feels like to be genuinely cared for—and let me tell you, I couldn’t be happier.

Hey there, I’m Moon!

I might have been a fancy sport horse once, but those days are long gone—not that I mind! What matters now is that I’m here at AHH, healing and happy. When I arrived, my badly split hoof and thyroid needed extra care. Thanks to the love and attention I’ve received, I’m feeling so much better.

I adore people, and I get along with all my horse friends. If you’ve got a good joke, I’m all ears. Now that I’m where I should be, life is much more enjoyable, and I’m here to make the most of it!

Sup? I’m Axl—the baby of the herd!

I’m young, curious, and still figuring things out. My buddy Ritz is showing me the ropes, and I just want to do my best—though I’m not always sure what that means yet!

When I was just two months old, I got my back leg tangled in baling twine and hurt it badly. I still limp and sometimes struggle to control it, but my humans don’t mind—they love me just as I am.Life here is all about patience, kindness, and growing at my own pace, and I couldn’t have found a better place to be me!

Hi, I’m Sunshine!

I’ve spent my life looking out for others—especially my best friend, a blind Quarter Horse. I stayed by his side for years, guiding and keeping him safe. But when my humans faced health challenges, I foundered and was in a lot of pain.

At AHH, I got the care and love I needed to heal. After two years, I’m finally pain-free and feeling like myself again. Now, I enjoy the sunshine, good company, and all the love my heart can hold!

Tennessee Walking Horse

Howdy, I’m Ritz.

I may look confident, but deep down, I’m still learning to trust myself. As a Tennessee Walking Horse, I spent my early years in the show world, which sounds glamorous, but it’s not. I was expected to perform without the patience or support I needed, which left me anxious and unsure.

Here at AHH, I’ve found something different—people who see me, understand me, and give me the security I crave. I still have big feelings sometimes, but with kindness and consistency, I’m learning I don’t have to carry my worries alone.

Gypsy Vanner

Salutations, I’m Ozzie!

I’m a striking black Gypsy with a vibrant spirit. I used to live in a cramped pen with my brother, but now I’ve found my home at AHH. Though I was once a stallion, being gelded was in my cards, yet I still carry the proud mindset of one!

I do have Chronic Progressive Lymphedema (CPL), which causes swelling in my lower legs, especially for Draft Breeds like me. But don’t worry—I’m well cared for and living my best life here. Say hello; I’d love to share more of my story!
