Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an experiential, relationship-centered approach that helps people build communication skills, confidence, emotional awareness, leadership, and self-regulation through interactions with horses. All experiences are ground-based—no riding.
Horses naturally respond to energy, boundaries, authenticity, and connection, offering powerful opportunities for reflection and growth.

A leadership experience built on trust, presence, and honest feedback — taught by rescued horses who have nothing to gain from politeness.
We believe the most important leadership lessons aren't found in a slide deck. They're found in a round pen, standing beside a 1,200-pound animal who will not follow anyone she doesn't trust.
Lead From the Ground Up is a hands-on program that uses our rescued horses — and the same trauma-informed approach that guides their care — to help leaders and teams build the awareness, regulation, and authentic connection that real influence is built on.

The Idea
Horses don't respond to titles, tone of voice, or a well-rehearsed talking point. They respond to what's actually happening in your body — your breathing, your intention, your consistency. That makes them uniquely honest teachers. Working with our horses, participants get immediate, judgment-free feedback on the kind of leadership presence no performance review can capture: are you grounded, or are you performing being grounded? Can your team feel the difference?

Why Horses, Why Now
Nervous System Regulation
Horses mirror the emotional state of the people around them. Participants learn to notice and shift their own regulation before they can influence anyone else's.
Non-Verbal Communication
Horses read intention, not words. Teams practice leading through presence and clarity rather than persuasion or volume.
Leadership Without Dominance
Horses do not respond well to force. The program reframes influence as trust-building rather than control.
Real-Time Feedback
There is no politics in a pasture. Horses respond to the leader actually in the room, not the one on the org chart.

Meet Your Guide
Art, Heart & Hoofbeats was founded by Anne Krocak, an artist and educator with more than 35 years of experience building accessible, trauma-informed learning spaces. Anne has lived with multiple sclerosis since age 17 — an experience that shaped her belief that resilience is built through connection, not perfection, and that every learner, human or horse, deserves an environment where it's safe to try.
The program is anchored by Fable, the rescue horse whose recovery inspired the sanctuary itself. Fable arrived fearful and withdrawn; through patience and consistency, she became one of the sanctuary's most trusted teaching partners. Her story — and the way she still tests every new person she meets for coherence, not credentials — is often where the deepest conversations about leadership begin.

What a Session Looks Like
Format: Ground-based work with our horses — no riding required or offered.
Duration: 2–3 hour sessions; half- and full-day options available for offsite retreats.
Group Size: Small groups, typically 6–12 participants, for direct facilitator attention.
Location: Art, Heart & Hoofbeats Sanctuary, Cologne, MN — about 30 minutes from Minneapolis.
