The Gift of Loving Ritz
Some friendships change us simply by being part of our lives.

This Saturday, we said goodbye to our beloved Ritz after his health changed suddenly and his breathing became increasingly difficult. Losing him has left an unmistakable quiet in our hearts and our herd.
But alongside the sadness is something equally true: we were fortunate to know him, care for him, and share part of our lives with him.
He was a teacher, a dance partner, a friend, and an important part of what makes Art, Heart & Hoofbeats Sanctuary a place where people and animals learn, connect, and belong.
Ritz taught in the way horses often do: without a lesson plan, without the right words, and without asking anyone to be someone they were not. A person standing beside him could learn to slow down, notice their breathing, and pay attention to what was happening in the moment. A hesitant visitor could discover the courage to reach out. A volunteer could experience the quiet satisfaction of connection with another living being. Someone who felt out of place elsewhere could find that belonging sometimes begins simply by being welcomed into the herd.

These moments may look small from the outside, but they change us.
They remind us that learning does not happen only in classrooms. It happens when we practice patience, notice someone else’s needs, take responsibility, make a new connection, and discover that our presence matters.
Ritz helped create those experiences.
He was part of a community built through morning greetings, familiar footsteps, shared work, laughter, quiet conversations in the pasture, and the people who show up because they understand that every life matters.
And when his condition worsened, he gave us one more difficult lesson: sometimes love asks us to put another being’s comfort before our own wish for more time.
That choice is heartbreaking. But it is also part of the promise we make to every animal in our care: you will be respected, you will be loved, and you will not face difficult moments alone.
Ritz was surrounded by that promise. And so are we.
The herd holding us now includes horses, volunteers, friends, and community members who understand that grief, like joy, is something we do not have to carry alone. In the days ahead, we are moving slowly. Taking in the view. Spending a little longer with the animals and with one another. Remembering that the time we share is fragile, and that the friendships formed here are an extraordinary gift.

Ritz’s life reminds us why this place matters. Here, people learn through experience. They find connection through care. They discover belonging by becoming part of something larger than themselves.
And when a member of our herd is gone, the love they helped create continues—in the people they reached, the lessons they offered, and the community that carries them forward.
We will miss you, Ritz. Thank you for the lessons, the dances, and the friendship. What a gift it was to walk beside you.
You will always belong to our herd.

So sad to find out about Ritz. Will miss looking for him in the herd and saying “hi.” Glad that he had the love and care that he received from Anne and everyone at AHH
