I have always believed in the healing power of creative expression, community, and connection to the natural world.

Living with Multiple Sclerosis, anxiety, and depression has shaped not only my life but the way I approach art—with vulnerability, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose.

Over the past 30 years, I have worked as a public artist, painter, sculptor, and mosaic artist, creating inclusive and empowering spaces through art.

My work has been featured by the Smithsonian, the Kennedy Center, the CDC Museum, and in schools, hospitals, senior communities, and public spaces across the country.         Whether through large-scale mosaics or community-driven installations, I am committed to making art accessible and reflective of every person’s inherent worth.

In 2023, I founded Art, Heart & Hoofbeats Sanctuary (AHHS) in Carver, Minnesota—a nonprofit equine rescue and creative wellness space—out of a desire to bring people and rescued animals together through art, movement, and meaningful connection. AHHS is a sanctuary not just for horses, but for humans, too.

My artistic practice at AHHS is deeply relational. I work alongside rescued animals, volunteers, and community members to create collaborative, trauma-informed art experiences that center healing and belonging. From therapeutic mosaic workshops to sound baths in the pasture, my work continues to explore how we can use art to regulate the nervous system, tell our stories, and reclaim joy.

Art, Heart & Hoofbeats is an extension of my lifelong work as an artist and advocate. Here, art meets empathy, and every brushstroke, hoofbeat, and shared moment becomes part of a larger healing journey. 100% purchases for to AHHS

Bertha Lunzers "My Bonnie Project"

at AHHS

It is from this enduring love and unhealed grief that “The Bonnie Project” was born—a tribute to the power of the human-horse bond and a call to honor the animals that shape our lives.

My Bonnie

As a young girl growing up on a rural farm, Bertha formed an unbreakable bond with Bonnie—a gentle mare who was more than a working animal; she was a source of love, comfort, and trust.

Each day, Bertha would sing softly to Bonnie as they walked together to round up the cows. No one else was allowed to halter Bonnie—only Bertha. Their connection was quiet and deep, built on mutual respect and affection.

Now in her 90s, Bertha still remembers Bonnie vividly. She carries both the joy of their time together and the sorrow of Bonnie’s tragic end, when a neighbor boy shot the horse. That wound never fully healed, and Bertha has often wondered whether Bonnie suffered. It is this enduring love, and the ache of loss, that inspired her to start The Bonnie Project at AHHS.

2025 My Bonnie Project @Art, Heart & Hoofbeats Sanctuary (AHHS) Funded Projects Includes:

  • Ongoing equine care and support, so every horse at AHH knows safety, healing, and love
