Freedom Is a Practice: Honoring Juneteenth at AHHS Through Connection and Choice

At Art, Heart & Hoofbeats Sanctuary (AHHS), we believe healing begins with being seen, being safe, and being celebrated. This Juneteenth, we reflect on the deep and enduring meaning of freedom—not just as a historic milestone, but as a daily choice.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It’s a day of remembrance, yes—but also of pride, joy, and resilience. It reminds us that freedom isn’t a fixed point in time—it’s an ongoing movement. A call to choose love over fear. To choose connection over division. To choose acceptance in the face of difference.

At AHHS, we make those choices every day—with horses, with one another, and within ourselves. Horses don’t judge. They meet us where we are. They remind us that we don’t have to be perfect to be worthy of belonging. And so, our community is built on that same principle: we are one, and connection is our way forward.

To support this mission, here are three skill-building practices we use at AHHS—and how you can bring them into your home, classroom, or wellness circle:

1. The “Welcome Table” Circle: We gather in a circle and ask: “When have you felt most welcome—or most unseen—in a group?”

Try it at home: Around a dinner or classroom table, invite each person to share what makes them feel included. Then ask: “What’s one small way we can help others feel that way too?” (Builds: empathy, active listening, and community awareness.)

2. Affirmation Wall of Belonging: Guests write affirmations or share moments when they felt truly valued, adding them to our “Belonging Wall.”

Try it at home or work: Start a “Belonging Board.” Post sticky notes with kind words, small acts of courage, or inclusive messages noticed throughout the week. (Builds: gratitude, visibility, and daily mindfulness.)

3. Horse Connection & Boundary Practice: We teach consent and emotional awareness through calm, respectful interaction with horses—who require clear signals and compassionate boundaries.

Try it at home: Practice saying “yes” and “no” without guilt. Reflect: Where do I need more space? Where do I long for connection? Go for a mindful walk to check in with your emotions and needs. (Builds: emotional regulation, self-trust, and confidence.)

Why It Matters: Every moment we choose connection over control, compassion over assumption, and love over fear—we embody freedom. And freedom is more than history—it’s presence, it's action, it's the courage to belong and let others do the same.

This Juneteenth, we honor the legacy of liberation by creating a sanctuary that welcomes all stories, all bodies, all hearts. Whether brushing a horse, creating art, or gathering in circle—we invite you to be wholly you.

From your friends at AHHS,

Happy Juneteenth!

Choose connection. Choose love. Choose each other.
