November updates from AHHS & Reflections from our First Sunday Morning with Horses Class
At Art, Heart & Hoofbeats Sanctuary (AHHS), we have a saying:We don’t just learn about horses—we learn from them.
As we move into a new chapter of sustainability at AHHS, we’re offering more joyful, experiential, horse-centered opportunities at a low cost. And because community care matters to us, we will always adjust fees if they ever feel out of reach. Our goal is to support our herd and keep our sanctuary accessible.
This weekend, we launched our very first Sunday Morning with Horses, a two-hour class designed to help people understand what it truly means to become a good herd member. To a horse, herd membership is first and always about safety. A prey animal survives by reading the world with stunning accuracy. Safety is not a concept—it is their constant awareness, their first thought, their truest instinct.
And wow… what a beautiful beginning.
Why “Herd Membership” Matters
Horses are prey animals. Their eyes, positioned on the sides of their heads, take in the entire landscape. They read energy, breath, intention, and unspoken signals long before they ever trust a touch.
Where humans often perform and pretend—we rush, we hide, we armor—horses ask for something simpler and far more honest:
Show up with your whole heart. Match your inside world with your outside behavior. Bring peace when entering the pasture.
When we learn to meet horses this way, we start to remember something ancient within ourselves: the wisdom of belonging.
The Practice of Being with Horses
We had eight incredible participants join our herd this Sunday. Before stepping into the pasture, we set an intention:
To be guests in the horses’ world, not humans trying to control it.
We took our time. We breathed. We observed herd dynamics—who led, who followed, who chose space, and who sought connection.
Instead of walking up to a horse with a brush and a goal, we tried something different:
We waited for the horses to come to us.
Some approached right away, lowering their heads in greeting. Some observed from a distance. Each offered a lesson in consent, boundaries, and the sacredness of choice.

We groomed, walked, listened, laughed, and shared stories—human and horse stories woven together like strands of a shared mane.
A Special Appearance by Zeus
We ended our morning in a closing circle with Zeus, our mini, who happily appointed himself as co-facilitator. He sniffed every person, delighted in the attention, and reminded us that joy is a form of wisdom too.
Each participant shared something they were taking with them into their week:
💚 More calm💚 Clearer boundaries💚 Slower breathing💚 A sense of belonging💚 A new respect for the silent language of horses

We Hope You’ll Join Us
The sun was shining across the pastures, and it felt like the world paused just long enough for all of us to remember who we are when we are not rushing.
These programs—offered at a modest fee—support the care of our rescue herd while creating a place where humans can breathe, glow, grow, be more present and reconnect with what matters.
If your heart needs a place to land, we invite you to join us for a future class, retreat, or volunteer day.
Because at AHHS, you don’t just visit the farm— You become part of the herd.
Wishing you peace, joy, and love this week,
Anne Art, Heart & Hoofbeats Sanctuary
