Dancing with Vulnerability

December Reflections at AHHS

How comfortable are you with being vulnerable?

I ask because I’m realizing something about myself:For someone who works every day with horses, art, and healing — I am still pretty scared to let down my barriers. Vulnerability is uncomfortable.

It feels risky. And yet, every time I step into the pasture, the herd asks me for exactly that.

Horses don’t accept the masks we learn to wear. They don’t respond to the performance, the armor, or the “I’m fine” façade. They ask — with their breath, their bodies, their presence — for truth.

They demand that I be real. Present. Honest. They require clarity, openness, and emotional congruence.

And so lately I’ve been sitting with a big question: How do I bring that same clarity and courage into my everyday life? How do I practice the same presence the herd requires when I leave the pasture and step back into the world — into leadership, into art, into community?

As an artist living with MS, anxiety, and depression, leading a nonprofit can feel like dancing with my own fear. I often wonder: Can I stay open, vulnerable, and grounded while also carrying responsibility, vision, and long-term sustainability for AHHS?

And the answer — the one the horses whisper again and again — is: Yes, but not alone.

As we move into a new year at AHHS, we’re shifting into a model where our work is held by many, not by one. Paid staff. Shared leadership. Accessible, high-quality art and equine programs reaching further into our community. More hands, more hearts, more help.

We’re dancing into this next chapter together.

The Questions I’m Asking as We Move Forward

  • How do we continue offering transformative art and equine experiences that remain accessible to all?

  • How do we expand our programming to reach new communities who need it most?

  • How do we ensure we have the funding, partnerships, and visibility to sustain our mission?

  • And most of all:How do I keep dancing with vulnerability — scared, yes, but still moving — so I can lead with authenticity and courage?

As we step into the new year, I want to invite you into this reflection too.

What are you dancing with right now?

What are you afraid to say out loud? Where are you being called to soften, open, or show up more honestly? Can you allow yourself to be vulnerable with your community — even if it feels a little scary?

Because if the horses teach us anything, it’s this:We don’t grow by being perfect. We grow by being present.

Let’s move forward — together — with trembling hands, open hearts, and a shared commitment to creating a space where all beings can heal, learn, and belong.

Here’s to the dance ahead. Here’s to vulnerability, courage, and connection. Here’s to the community we’re building, one brave step at a time.

If you feel called to support our work…

There are several meaningful ways to help us carry this mission into the new year:

  • Gift Certificates for classes and AHHS experiences

  • Memberships, including our Ambassador Membership

  • One-time or recurring donations

  • Volunteer opportunities

  • Program or business partnerships

Every act of support helps us keep healing horse education, creative wellness, and community connection accessible to all.Thank you for walking — and dancing — beside us.

With love, gratitude and hope,

Anne
