Title: Fighting the Shadows, Together: What the Marvel Movie Thunderbolts Can Teach Us About Healing at AHHS
Not every hero wears a cape—and not every team starts with trust.
In Marvel’s new movie Thunderbolts, a group of antiheroes and former villains is brought together to take on missions no one else wants. Each member carries deep scars, regrets, and pasts they’d rather forget. And yet, something remarkable happens: when they begin to connect, to trust, and to fight not just beside each other—but for each other—they become more than survivors. They become a team.
That’s the heart of what we do at Art, Heart, and Hoofbeats Sanctuary (AHHS).
From Brokenness to Belonging
Like the characters in the Thunderbolts, many of us—and the horses we care for—have been through things that left us feeling isolated, discarded, or not good enough. Trauma, grief, physical and mental health challenges like depression, or simply the weight of life’s battles can leave people (and horses) feeling like they don’t belong anywhere.
But just like in the movie, something powerful happens when individuals come together, even in their brokenness. At AHHS, we create a space where everyone—whether human or horse—has value, purpose, and a place on the team (herd).
Our Team is Built on Connection
The members of the Thunderbolts don’t become stronger because they have superpowers. They become stronger because they begin to understand each other. They fight not for glory, but for healing—and that’s what makes them powerful.

At AHHS:
We don’t need perfect pasts to belong here.
We recognize that healing is messy, nonlinear, and deeply personal.
We know that depression and anxiety feeds on disconnection—and that connection is its greatest antidote.
That’s why everything we do—from brushing a rescue horse, to sitting quietly in the pasture, to making art, or just showing up for one another—is about rebuilding that connection.
Supporting Each Other Through the Storm
In the movie, the Thunderbolts often disagree, struggle, and doubt themselves. But they keep coming back to the team. They realize that no one gets better alone.
At AHHS, we believe the same. We support each other:
When someone is quiet or struggling, we notice.

When a horse won’t trust yet, we wait—without pressure.
When someone cries while painting or walking beside Moon or Fable, we don’t try to fix it. We just stay.
Because presence matters more than perfection.
Everyone Has a Role
The members of the Thunderbolts were never meant to be heroes—but they became one another’s lifelines. And sometimes, that’s what healing looks like: not saving the world, but saving each other, one small, kind, brave act at a time.
At AHHS, every person who comes through the gate adds to the heartbeat of this place. Whether you’re brushing a horse, painting a ceramic tile, holding space for someone else’s story, or just sitting in stillness, you matter.
You don’t have to be “fixed” to be part of the team. You just have to show up.
Join Our Real-Life Thunderbolts Herd at AHHS.

We are the messy, the mighty, the misunderstood. We are the ones who keep trying. We are the Thunderbolts of AHHS—fighting for connection, dignity, and healing and joy.
And in this herd, no one is left behind.
