Gratitude in Every HoofbeatBy Anne Krocak, Executive Director, AHHS
At Art, Heart, and Hoofbeats Sanctuary, we’ve learned that gratitude isn’t just something you feel—it’s something you practice. It’s a way of moving through the world with awareness, presence, and connection. Whether it's in the quiet rhythm of brushing a horse, the shared silence during a sound bath, or the laughter over art supplies and snacks, gratitude lives in the small and sacred moments we create here—together.
But this isn't just poetic—it’s backed by science.
A study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology found that individuals who actively practice gratitude experience significantly lower levels of depression and anxiety and show greater overall life satisfaction. Researchers have even discovered that writing just one letter of gratitude a week can increase happiness and emotional resilience. Why? Because gratitude rewires the brain to focus on what is working, rather than what is missing or broken.

At AHHS, we see that transformation every day.
Gratitude shows up when a previously shut-down horse begins to trust again. It shows up when a teenager discovers their own quiet strength while leading Ritz through the pasture. It shows up when someone, who came only to volunteer, finds a sense of peace they didn’t even know they were missing.
We are endlessly grateful for the people who make this healing work possible:
Our dedicated volunteers who show up rain or shine to feed, brush, and connect.
Our Ambassadors who carry the heart of our mission into the broader community.
Our funders and partners who trust that healing and belonging are worth investing in.
You don’t have to wear boots or know how to hold a halter to make a difference here. Every kind word, every shared story, every hour given—we feel it. It matters.
Every day at AHHS, we create a better community—within and without. Inside the fences and far beyond them, the gratitude we practice together ripples outward in powerful ways.
So today, we pause to ask you:What are you grateful for?
Maybe it's a moment of connection, a person who showed up for you, or just the sun on your face after a long week. Take a breath. Let that gratitude land.
And know that we are grateful—for you.For believing in healing. For being part of this herd. For helping us build a world where everyone belongs.
With muddy boots and a full heart,
Anne
